Vue du sommet sur le versant nord

Start (north side): Saint-Étienne-de-Cuines (483m).

Road:

The first part (until Saint-Colomban-des-Villards) is not extraordinary. The slope is variable between 7-8 % and the road is bad surfaced. The trees protects from the sun. After the village of Saint-Colomban-des-Villards (where the road is slightly descending), the slope become much harder (sometimes 12%). The last 2 kilometers leading to the final hairpins are quite killing. The road is better surfaced, but it is quite narrow. The last kilometer is terribly hard.
After a little descent (200m), the road joins the southern side of the col de la Croix de Fer. You reach the summit after 3 more kilometers.
